Article: Not all neon is neon

Not all neon is neon

Not all neon is neon

Most of what gets sold as neon in Dubai is LED. That isn’t a scandal. The problem is being sold one thing and told it’s the other.

LED is a good medium. We build with it every day — nine out of ten pieces that leave this studio are LED. I’m not here to tell you it’s inferior.

But I bend glass with fire for a living, and I’ve watched the word “neon” come loose from the thing it describes. Someone comes into the showroom with a photograph of a piece they’ve been quoted for, calls it neon, and it isn’t. Nobody lied to them exactly. They just weren’t told.

We work in three materials in one studio in Al Quoz: hand-bent glass neon, LED flex, and acrylic LED. That means we have no reason to talk any of them down, and every reason to tell you which one your idea actually wants.

Here’s how to tell them apart.

Glass neon: the original, and still the only one of its kind

A glass tube, heated over a flame and bent by hand, then filled with gas and lit by electricity. That’s the whole technology. It hasn’t meaningfully changed in a century.

Neon gas burns red-orange. Argon reads as ice blue. The rest of the palette comes from coloured tubing and phosphor coatings inside the glass — which is why a glass piece has a depth of colour that’s difficult to describe until you’re standing in front of one.

Two things make it unmistakable. The first is that every tube is shaped by hand, so no two pieces are identical — including two of the same design. The second is the glow. Light comes off the tube in every direction at once, all three hundred and sixty degrees, so it washes the wall behind it and throws colour into the room instead of pointing at you.

That second thing is what you can’t manufacture. It’s why people who’ve seen both can tell in a second.

We bend ours here, in our own workshop. The glass comes from New York. The transformers come from California and Italy. From AED 2,800, and three to seven working days — which makes it the fastest of the three, not the slowest, because we take fewer glass orders. In the UAE we install it ourselves, so it arrives on your wall rather than in a box; Saudi and Qatar we deliver by road. We don’t send glass further than that — it doesn’t survive the journey reliably enough to promise, and I’d rather say so than replace a piece that arrived in pieces.

What it can’t do

We work in 10mm tube, which sets the minimum detail. Very fine lettering and very small marks won’t bend — the tube simply won’t hold the shape. If your design needs that, one of the other two will do it better and I’ll say so at drawing stage, not after you’ve paid.

Glass neon comes with no warranty. It’s hand-made and it’s glass. What it comes with instead is us: a broken tube can be re-bent and refilled, which is something no LED can do. Tell us what happened and we’ll quote the repair.

And it goes outside. The connections are sealed with silicone so rain can’t reach them — glass has been lighting terraces and frontages for a hundred years. It isn’t made to be submerged, though. That’s a different material, and it’s further down this page.

LED flex: the one most people actually want

A flexible 8mm line, shaped to your design and mounted on an acrylic backing.

It isn’t a replica of anything. It’s its own medium, and at its best it does things glass can’t: it runs cool, it survives being knocked, and it can go above a child’s bed without anyone worrying. Safe, light, affordable, up in ten minutes — that combination is why it’s ninety per cent of what we make.

It gives you the neon look. The glow, the line, the colour. Which is what most people are after when they go looking for neon. It is not neon, and we won’t call it that.

What separates a good one from a cheap one

Small things, and they are the whole difference between a piece that looks made and one that looks bought.

Twenty-two colours, all at the same intensity — no dim blues, no washed-out purples. One continuous line of light with no visible dots along the run. A jacket coloured all the way through, so the piece still looks considered when it’s switched off, instead of showing a cheap white strip down the side. Sealed end caps, no exposed wire, a proper male-to-female connector, and a transformer that plugs straight into a socket with nothing dangling.

Your piece is designed here in Al Quoz and then produced to our specification. It took years to find the materials and the people who would hold that standard, and the list above is exactly what that search was for.

From AED 1,200. Eight to ten working days. Indoors, one-year warranty. It needs a minimum run of about three centimetres, so a full stop comes out as a short dash rather than a dot. And when an LED reaches the end of its life, the piece is remade rather than repaired — that’s how the medium works, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing.

Acrylic LED: the one nobody’s heard of yet

Solid cast acrylic with the light sealed inside. Not a strip on a panel — a rigid object that carries its own shape, so it mounts bare to the wall. No backing panel, no visible fixings, nothing framing it. The standard build is 180 degrees, screwed from behind, so once it’s up there’s nothing to see but the piece.

It’s the finest line we make. Detail down to a centimetre, where flex needs three. And it comes in nine thicknesses from 8 to 20mm, which means the weight of the line is a choice rather than a given — an 8mm script and a 20mm statement piece are different objects, not the same object at different sizes.

It’s also waterproof. Not splash-resistant. We have film of lit letters fully submerged in water, which is the only way anyone believes it.

You’ll hear this material called “acrylic neon”. We don’t use that name. It gives the neon look and it does things glass can’t, but it’s LED inside acrylic, and calling it neon makes the word meaningless.

From AED 2,200. Twelve to fifteen working days. Indoors or out, two-year warranty. This is what we specify when a piece has to survive a public space — a mall atrium, a hotel terrace, a restaurant frontage, anywhere it will be looked at closely and still has to look right in two years.

One more thing, about colour

This catches people out on both LED materials, so it’s worth thirty seconds.

A coloured finish reads as that colour when the piece is switched off, and lights to a strong, saturated version of it. A white finish sits pale and quiet when it’s off, almost disappearing against a light wall, and lights to something softer and more pastel.

So the choice isn’t only “what colour”. It’s whether the piece should be an object in the room when it’s dark, or vanish until you switch it on. Both are right. They’re just different decisions, and it’s easier to make it before we draw than after.

So which one does your idea want?

Glass, if the piece is the point. A feature wall, a bar, a gallery, something people stand in front of and photograph. If it needs to feel like an object rather than a graphic, it wants glass.

LED flex, if it needs to be light, safe, repeatable, shipped abroad, or hung above a bed. For most rooms this is the right answer, and it’s the one I’d put in my own house.

Acrylic LED, if the design has detail finer than three centimetres, or it has to live outside, or it’s going somewhere that will be looked at closely for years.

And if you’re still not sure, come to the showroom in Al Quoz and see all three lit in the same room. That settles it in about thirty seconds, which is faster than any article can.
